Garrett Porter (May 28, 2008), currently ranked #180

N2FL:  At what age did you start playing football?

G.P.:  I first started in the fourth grade. I've been on varsity teams ever since. hah.

N2FL:  When and who was your first scholarship offer?

G.P.:  My first offer came from Texas Tech after my sophomore season, in the spring.

N2FL:  How many scholarship offers do you currently have?

G.P.:  I have four. Arizona, Texas, Texas Tech, and Virginia. TCU had talked about it as well as Stanford.

N2FL:  What was your favorite college team growing up?

G.P.:  I never really had a favorite.

N2FL:  Have a favorite NFL Team?

G.P.:  Not really but everybody loves the Cowboys.

N2FL:  Do you try and emulate any specific player?

G.P.:  Not really. Offensive Linemen tend to be the same.

N2FL:  Any particular reason for the jersey number?

G.P.:  Not really. Its just the number they gave me. But I would have to say it is the sexiest number (#78) a lineman can get.

N2FL:  You committed to Texas in early February, why did you decide to end the process so early?

G.P.:  It was the place I felt the most comfortable. And I believe God was pulling me there.

N2FL:  What were some of the considerations when choosing your school?

G.P.:  Location and they keep their lineman athletic. They don't want 360 pound monsters.

N2FL:  Are there any schools who continue to recruit you despite your commitment?

G.P.:  Texas Tech and the usual junk mail.

N2FL:  Who was your lead recruiter at Texas?

G.P.:  Coach (Mac) McWhorter and Coach Tolly (Mike Tolleson).

N2FL:  Despite your pledge to the Horns, will you take any "official visits" anywhere else?

G.P.:  Nope there is no changing for me. I'm locked in.

N2FL:  Was there another school(s) in consideration before you pulled the trigger on the Longhorns, and what was it about Texas that ultimately sold you on them?

G.P.:  All four schools mentioned about had a chance. Texas is just a great program. They have the record for consecutive 10 win seasons. It is a huge family atmosphere (even with just random fans who may read rivals or keep up with newsletters). They are just the place that I see myself succeeding.

N2FL:  What do you view as some of your playing strengths?

G.P.:  Flexibility in my hips and knees. Most big guys can't play low and bend and actually use their leverage. I think I have harnessed that power. My run blocking is great but I've heard it said that my pass blocking skills are extraordinary. And my 10 yard dash is in the 1.6's.

N2FL:  What are some things you would like to work on between now and college?

G.P.:  Speed, agility, strength, you know the usual. I also am working on responsibility. Mom's not going to be there to do laundry or cook, self reliability is huge.

N2FL:  What positions along the Offensive Line are you being recruited to play?

G.P.:  Tackle mainly. Coach McWhorter will put the best five on the field even if it is 5 tackles. That's the way he works.

N2FL:  How do you feel about Redshirting?

G.P.:  I think redshirting is a great thing for offensive linemen. The O-line is probably the most physically demanding position on the field as far as strength. The Redshirting gives offensive linemen the chance to build up strength as well as get another year of free education.

N2FL:  Do you have a major in mind?

G.P.:  I am either looking into some sort of pediatric care or will study to be a music minister (yeah big man's got talent ha-ha).

N2FL:  What are your goals for your senior season?

G.P.:  I'd say state championship for sure. And a repeat of first team all state.

N2FL:  Have you communicated with any prospective recruits about attending Texas with you?

G.P.:  Yes. Marcus Davis, Paden Kelley, Thomas Ashcraft, Mason Walters, Garrett Gilbert, pretty much everyone.

N2FL:  Who has been the biggest influence in your life?

G.P.:  The biggest influence would have to be my parents. They are always backing me and thinking about my future. They love Texas and will always love it. They have instilled in me good morals and I thank them for that. They always help out when I'm down. They keep me on track with God and the way I should live. They are awesome.
